Mobile World Live — Facebook is holding talks with a number of ISPs in India to expand its Express Wi-Fi programme, after trials in rural areas in partnership with BSNL. Express Wi-Fi, aimed at making broadband in rural areas more affordable, rolled out 125 rural public Wi-Fi hotspots with the state-run operator as part of a pilot project, the Economic Times reported.

Prasad, who has over 4.65 lakh followers on Facebook, received the complaints relating to the three departments under his ministry.

Facebook is investing Rs 5 crore per annum for buying bandwidth from BSNL in this joint initiative that also includes IT infrastructure services providers such as Quad Zen and Trimax for equipment and fibre deployment, BSNL chairman and managing director Anupam Shrivastava told ET.

Times of India — NEW DELHI: State-run telecom service provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) will invest Rs 6,000 crore over the next three years to set up some 40,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the country, its chairman-cum-managing director Anupam Shrivastava has said. “We are now thinking of rolling out Wi-Fi hotspot through capital expenditure model also. We are in the process of having our tender ready. We will be floating our tender and put our own equipment. We will be doing everything,” Shrivastava told IANS in an interview.

The BSNL has taken initiative to implement the ambitious plan at the earliest,” Chief General Manager (NE-circle) of BSNL, D P Singh said.
Times of India — NEW DELHI: The decision on merging state-run BSNL and MTNL will be taken in the next four-five months, telecom secretary Rakesh Garg said. “BSNL, MTNL merger decision will be taken in four-five months after studying the IIM report on it,” he said. Anupam Shrivastava, BSNL chairman-cum-managing director, said MTNL will be delisted before the merger. MTNL stocks rallied 20% intra-day. The stocks were trading 14.46% up at 2.11 pm in the Bombay Stock Exchange.

The government plans to set up 2,500 Wi-Fi spots this year alone. The NDA government is taking many steps to make BSNL, as well as MTNL, profitable again.
NEW DELHI: To boost landline business, state-run telecom operator BSNL has announced unlimited free calling scheme during night hours from its fixed line phones to any operator including mobile phones anywhere in the country from May 1. The scheme would be operational between 9 PM to 7 AM and would cover all type of connections, BSNL said in a statement. “BSNL has introduced unlimited free calling during night hours from its landline phones to all landline phones and mobile phones of all service provider’s network on all India basis from 1st May,” BSNL said.
NEW DELHI: State-run telecom operator BSNL will invest Rs 7,000 crore in setting up Wi-Fi hotspots integrated with 3G, 4G networks across the country over the next two to three years, a top company official said. “Wi-Fi is an obvious choice for BSNL going forward but it alone cannot be successful. It has to be integrated with 3G, 4G network so that customer can be seamlessly transferred to Wi-Fi. In two to three years, we will be investing Rs 7,000 crore to set up integrated Wi-Fi across the country,” chairman and managing director of BSNL Anupam Shrivatava said while speaking at TeleAnalysis event here.
Chennai, Mar 20 (PTI) State-owned BSNL has undertaken a Rs 1,000 crore investment plan which include launch of Skype facility and setting up of Wi-Fi hotspots at tourist places, a top official said today. “We have taken several measures. Only last week we began migration of landline customers to next generation service facility. It will provide lot of services to customers. Second, we are experimenting with BSNL Skype. For the Wi-Fi hotspots, 14 centres in tourist places in South zone have been identified,” BSNL Director N K Gupta said.
NEW DELHI: Government today ruled out privatization of BSNL and MTNL even as it admitted that the two state-run telecom service providers were not in the pink of their health. Responding to a supplementary during the Question Hour in Rajya Sabha, telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, said the intention of the government was to bring them back to profitability.
NEW DELHI: Telecom operators Airtel and BSNL are likely to sign a pan-India roaming pact within a month to strengthen their 2G mobile services in areas where either of them is having a weak or negligible presence. “We are soon going to sign a pan-India intra-circle roaming agreement with Airtel with a focus to strengthen coverage in rural areas. Commercials are being worked out. This is most likely to signed within a month,” BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Anupam Shrivastava told PTI.

A resident of Ghaziabad in the National Capital Region, he had been running from pillar to post just to get a bill for his landline and broadband connection, which was not delivered for six months. ” Finally, I had to use my contacts to prompt them in generating a bill. Is this how you do business?” says Kumar, who discontinued his BSNL connection and hopped on to a private operator.
