Digi Times — Overall smartphone share of the global handsets market is slowing as mobile phone (or feature phone) sales show some resilience through local brands in emerging markets. While ABI Research finds major China-based vendors are continuing to witness solid volume growth, the market region could be on the cusp of a change as Google Android regains momentum and fights back against Android Open Source Project (AOSP) devices.
NEW DELHI: Google has gone back to the drawing board for Android One and come up with a version 2.0 as it were. Having met with a tepid response for the first phones based on the system in September last year, it appears to be reorienting the strategy toward people who’ve had smartphones before rather than first-time users, said a person with knowledge of the plan. That involves a shift in pricing as well.
Android One, a budget smartphone project initiated by Google last September, has been hindered due to the fierce competition in the budget smartphone market, especially from Chinese brands, reports Tencent’s tech news web portal. Under the project, Google has partnered with smartphone companies in developing countries. The manufacturers are responsible for hardware manufacturing and sales while Google takes charge of the preinstall and upgrade of Android system and apps. Android One smartphones are mostly priced at under US$100 and use components with a lower performance than more expensive models.
US$100 phones used to be awful. They were made by companies you’d never heard of, the interface looked like it was designed by a raccoon with a paw full of crayons it just found in a trashcan, and there was always the sneaking worry that the thing would explode in your pocket and blow your family jewels to smithereens. Xiaomi changed that in mid-2013 with the first Redmi phone.
Manila-based Yoyo Holdings, the Japanese-led startup known for its mobile rewards platform Candy, announced last week that it has launched a lock screen-based rewards platform for Android users in Indonesia, called PopSlide. The app is available on Google Play in Indonesia. The platform distributes news, weather forecasts, other updates, and ads to your smartphone lock screen. In return for viewing such information, users receive rewards for free Internet access on their smartphone.
Google announced today it is finally offering the much-anticipated Android One smartphones in the Philippines. This comes five months after the Android One program first launched in India. Two Android One phones will be available in the Philippines, made by homegrown phone brands Cherry Mobile and MyPhone. Caesar Sengupta, Google’s vice president for product management, says that the new phones – the Cherry One and MyPhone Uno – will be sold for below PHP5,000 (US$113).
Google has taken its Android One initiative outside India with a launch in Indonesia in partnership with Spice Mobility’s local brand Nexian and two other handset makers, Evercoss and Mito. This comes at a time when the US search giant’s Indian device partners are launching the devices in Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
CyanogenMod, a free, community built distribution of Android, will now be available for all Android One smartphone owners, in a new update to the ROM. It is another move by CyanogenMod appealing to the Indian audience, after Micromax announced an exclusive contract with CyanogenMod in India. The Micromax Yureka is the first device capable of running CyanogenMod inside India.
Bangladeshi phone maker Symphony Mobile, in partnership with Banglalink and Google, unveiled the Symphony Roar A50, a budget smartphone which runs on Android One. Priced at BDT 8,700 (US$111), the Symphony Roar is the first ever Android One phone made in Bangladesh. The phone is available for pre-registration on the Banglalink website and sales are expected to start sometime in mid-January.

The idea behind Android One is to get the world’s remaining smartphone-less five billion inhabitants connected to the mobile web via a handset that is cheap yet good quality, promises the features that everyone expects from a handset and which will carry on being supported with software updates for some time to come. BANGALORE: Google is gearing up to spend more than 100 crore with its partners on advertising and marketing for the $100 Android One smartphone, reports Economic Times. India being one of the fastest growing smartphone market in Asia-Pacific region, with an increased rate of 186 percent in the first quarter of 2014. The launch is planned in October for Diwali, when Sundar Pichai, the senior V-P at Google is expected to visit India during that time.
